Forgot to add that when you install/reinstall from Synaptic, you still
should restart the session:
$ sudo /etc/init.d/samba restart
or
$ sudo services samba restart
But in your case, you might want to also do a reboot just to see if smdb
and nmdb fire up & are running on the reboot. Note: it's not usually
necessary to reboot, but given your previous problem(s) it can't hurt to
test.
