multi card reader not working

Hey folks,
Here is an odd one.
My Acer Aspire has a built in card reader for various camera cards. I
know for a fact this worked before on Ubuntu 9.10 because that was the
straw that broke the camel's back for me and finally got me to switch
over. So I guess it must have worked in the Live CD - and when it
did I figured it was time to switch from Windows. I don't recall
whether I've tried it until now since then, but trying it now it is
not working.
Googling turned up this with an odd fix :

2 people have confirmed this worked for them. Very odd.
I'm just wondering if anyone where might have an easier fix for me -
would rather not take my PC apart again :-)

ok so I got my SD cards mounting and reading now. here's what i did -
powered down
disconnected multi-card reader from motherboard
powered up and let run up to kubuntu login screen
powered down
plugged multi-card reader back into motherboard
powered up
logged in, inserted SD card, and VOILA! (NOT VIOLA)
oh and i also went into my BIOS and removed FLOPPY DRIVE from the boot
priority (because there isn't one installed - not sure if this
affected the SD issue or not...)
i know this is an odd fix and it seems strange that installing karmic
caused the issue but whatever i got it working.
