virtualbox wont show USB ports in the guest OS

Cybe & Noop,
If the problem was file transfer than it was no problem but it is 
real-time data access - albeit not fast - via USB.
One application is reading data from a weatherstation and the other is 
input from my keyboard.
And yes, I have USB enabled in VB (and filters set) and even see the 
USB-devices in the device tab on VB manager, but it is greyed out.
