Hi John,
are you still having problems?
I have 3 machines all with dial up set up on them.
2 netcomm external serial modems. on one machine I had to install a serial
card as this machine came without any serial ports. Installed on ttyS0
for one and ttyS2 on the other. My laptop has a USRobotics USB external
modem installed on ttyACM0. All installed with no problems with sudo
pppconfig. Have also setup dial up with one of the serial modems on
other peoples machines using my internet connection (these
people new to Ubuntu, and don't have an account with an isp), so I can
then setup their sources lists,
and install software for them.
Have a look at

hope this helps.
Take Care
Winton
