New to Ubuntu( Virus scanners) is clam safe/Avg free errors can not open all files?

I am tyring to find info on clav av I keep  hearing it can cause more harm than good but no details! And when I run AVG free it seems not to scan or be able to open Ubuntu system files I get 15 to 20 errors and then it finishes the scan is this normal?

I am useing Ubuntu 8.10 Intrepid
