Also be aware that you'll need to do the scanning from within the VM.
Nothing that I've tested (so far) will scan the .vdi from within linux.
IMO it's generally better to forego interactive scanning & instead
selectively scan on-demand; AVG, BitDefender & others will allow you to
do this. Reason being is that an AV in a VM can take up quite a bit of
CPU during the process.
Regarding games; the latest versions of VirtualBox (2.4.1 and 2.2.0) now
provide 3D OpenGL support, so the performance in that area has improved:

That said; I've not tried any video intensive games on my Win2KPro
guest. So, you'll just have to test & try.
Note to those upgrading to 2.2.0 - there is a clipboard bug that
can/will crash a Windows Guest. See:

for the workaround/fix.
