FYI, I would not just delete TB manually but remove it using apt-get, aptitude or one of the packaging managers such a synaptic. It may not hurt to just delete it but why take the chance; why not remove it the Ubuntu and Linux way as it's safer.
As far as your message base goes, if you left a copy on the server for all, you should be ok.
Another reply about compacting your mail folders sounds like good advice. I don't use TB enough to help resolve your slowness issue. Good luck in your efforts.
