I don't think there's a specific Ubuntu reason for what I say, nor is
there anything wrong with your suggestion of AV scanners. There's
just not that much right with it, either. If someone develops a /new/
way to punch me in the face it makes no difference how trained up I am
for conventional fisticuffs; he'll still hit me. Before I am safe again
I must develop a strategy or have one developed for me that addresses
his new attack.
It is much the same with virus attacks. Since we (most of us) /can't/
develop a defensive strategy of our own, until definitions are
updated /by the anti-virus folks/ we are all susceptible to newly
developed attacks (assuming, once again, that they are possible). The
anti-virus software /cannot ever/ be up-to-date as it is a rear-guard
action at best. Profitable strategies would be that we would be
better off if we weren't present to be hit or else invisible to the
hitter instead of waiting around for a third party to help us defend
ourselves.
I fully agree about the VMs. I've used them. I didn't like them much
but can see the attraction if one /must/ use (spit, hiss) that /other/
OS.
