It might help us to help you if you gave some hardware information. The
two most important things would be:
* How much RAM does the machine have?
* What is the cpu speed? 200 MHz? 400 MHz? and so on...
Are you using the so-called "alternate" disk installer or the "desktop"
live CD ?

No, the Xubuntu installer should handle formatting, partitioning, and
creating file systems...
