Which is pretty much exactly the way David Brin explained it :-)
Except for time it took.  IIRC he had it was on the order of a decade
or so, not the time frame you postulated.  I don't know if that was a
liberty he took for the novel or not.  And the results of having it
orbiting around in the core of the earth....  which is a plot twist
I'm not revealing.
