OK, as you've seen, there are no quick or foolproof fixes, but it seems to
me that the real problem is that you're asking the impossible. 1680/105 is
a 1.6:1 ratio. 1280x768 isn't. You want 1280x800, and it's always
possible that your system doesn't support it.
Do:
# grep Mode: /var/log/Xorg.0.log | grep -v 0x0
That will give you the list of all the _available_ modes. Pick one.
