Foolproof fix for screen resolution?

Again, thanks for the suggestions.
I've tired editing the xorg.conf file many times now. The system seems
to be very fond of 800x600. That's what I almost always get, no matter
what resolution I think I'm configuring for.
Sometimes the result is a huge desktop that is much larger than the
screen, and that i can scroll around on, but the screen proportions are
still the same as with 800x600.
I'll keep playing with it and will send a follow-up message if I get the
desired screen resolution of 1280x768, or more precisely a 1.6 ratio
between width and height.
