Again, thanks for the suggestions.

I've tired editing the xorg.conf file many times now. The system seems
to be very fond of 800x600. That's what I almost always get, no matter
what resolution I think I'm configuring for.

Sometimes the result is a huge desktop that is much larger than the
screen, and that i can scroll around on, but the screen proportions are
still the same as with 800x600.

I'll keep playing with it and will send a follow-up message if I get
the desired screen resolution of 1280x768, or more precisely a 1.6
ratio between width and height.

This is a promising approach but it has not worked. I keep ending up
with an 800x600 screen regardless of what selections I make, even when I
was able to select the desired 1280x768. A couple of combinations of
screen resolution, etc. resulted in a huge desktop, much bigger than the
screen, but mostly it goes to 800x600.
After about 40 tries, I've rebooted to recovery mode and got back to
1680x1050, which has the right screen proportions but is hard for me to
read.
Thank you for the suggestion...any other ideas for how to get 1280x768?

If you go back to the 'Applications|Other|Screens and Graphics' and
reset the resolution there it will create an /etc/X11/xorg.conf file for
you like the old Gutsy xorg.conf's. From there you may be able to modify
to get a proper 1280x768. In particular, look in the 'Section "Screen"'
and 'Virtual'; make sure it is set to 1280 768. Note: look in 'Modes'
directly underneath that to make sure you also have 1280x768@<frequency>
where <frequency> is the proper frequency for your monitor. According to
this:
<http://reviews.cnet.com/lcd-monitors/samsung-syncmaster-204bw/4507-3174_7-32081063.html>
the max resolution is 1680 x 1050 / 60 Hz but the Max Sync rates are
75 Hz x 81 KHz.
Over the past few days I've been rebuilding some discarded (recycled)
Windows computers & in the process I would find that if I set a high
1024x768 rate for the monitor I was using the fonts would be blurry at
85hz, but would come in clear as could be at 75hz. So, try a few
combinations to see if you can get the right one.
