It sounds to me like the Synaptic Package Manager didn't install it at 
all.  But that's just a guess.  And the install instructions (I'm 
assuming it was an 'apt-get install' command) were offered by Ubuntu, 
not by Mozilla.  Each distro has it's own method of installing 
applications.  Some use compressed binaries, some (like Gentoo) compile 
from source at install time.  I rarely see linux instructions for RPMs 
or .DEBs online, it's usually for source installs.  The general 
consensus is you should know how to install those packages manually.

True, there are some sites that include install instructions for binary 
packages.  But more often than not, those apps are available in the 
distro repos that you use.
