ive been using 8.04 since it was in testing, never any problems.
currently using it on an ibm laptop, compaq desktop, a homebrew desktop,
and dual boot on an alienware laptop.

sounds like classic hardware problems to me ...... I had exactly the
same symptoms on overheating machines, leaky capacitors, bad memory,
failing power supply..... all things to check.

you try running acpi -V every couple minutes after booting? see what
the temp is, and go from there. checking logs could help as well.
