As others have already told you, gnome and kde are desktop enviroments
and you can easily install both on the same system (plus many others).
They've also told you that you can only select after boot at the login
window. However, the login window is easily modifiable, and with some
googling (search on: Ubuntu +login theme) you can probably find a login
window theme that will allow you do just what you are asking.

There are login themes that will allow you to select the user (Happy
Gnome with Browser), circle themes, in fact so many themes that if one
were to rattle them off they would sound like Forrest Gump any his
famous lines about ways to cook shrimp.
