Hi Kjetil
You can do something pretty close to this, and it is easy because you 
ask about ubuntu.
You question asks about actual boot up, however, it would be more 
usual to make such a choice at login, not bootup as such.

It will be good practice to verify that your system is up to date  so 
first use update manager to check this.

then, if you already have ubuntu installed, use synaptic package 
manager to install the package
kubuntu-desktop

Alternatively, if you started only with kubuntu installed, then 
install the package
ubuntu-desktop


When you next login, use the options menu (in ubuntu it is at lower 
left hand side of display, in kubuntu, a rectangle icon near the login 
box), choose which 'session' to use - gnome or kde.
