Can grub be installed on a md array?

and why bother complicating things just to save yourself a 10MB
partition?  Unless the system had hot swap drives, you have to boot at
least once to replace a failed drive anyhow, and there is no penalty for
making even humble boot fault tolerant.  Really, I find your resistance
to the idea outright bizarre.
