well, I have followed every lead and directions on Array.org/ubuntu
from Adam and a couple of fellas on his forum.

NO LUCK!

I mean, everything they've put together is fine BUT the touchpad issue.

The GOOD news is that I went back to Hardy, I followed Adam's lead and
I edited the xorg.conf to look like this:

----
Section "InputDevice"
	Identifier	"Synaptics Touchpad"
	Driver "synaptics"
	Option "SendCoreEvents"	"true"
	Option "Device" "/dev/psaux"
	Option "Protocol" "alps"
#	Option "Protocol" "auto-dev"
	Option "HorizEdgeScroll"	"0"
	Option "SHMConfig" "off"
	Option "TouchpadOff" "1"
EndSection
----

Changed "Protocol auto-dev for alps" and I now have the touchpad tab
on System > Preferences > Mouse.

But either using Hardy's default or
gsynaptics-elantech_0.9.7-3asus4_i386.deb, my touchpad i still active,
no matter which settings I set it to.

Any ideas about how to actually disable it?

/me wonders...shouldn't all default laptops installations prefer a
dead touchpad-click?
