Hello Sam,
I'm no expert and certainly don't understand all that's been said on the thread. But, FWIW, if I were having trouble with my desktop, I would reinstall ubuntu-desktop or kubuntu-desktop or whatever one your using and if need be restore from backup what you may have lost on setups. Since, I don't do backups, that wouldn't work for me but I'd reinstall anyway to get a properly working system. Don't see where reinstalling the desktop would hurt anything as I've done many times. Sorry, if I'm missing something here but you could ask the list if reinstalling the desktop would have some undesirable results and take it from there. HTH,
