Seems as if the Intrepid 8.10 folks forgot to add floppy. Open a
terminal (Applications|Accessories|Terminal) and enter:

sudo modprobe floppy
gfloppy

Now, to get it to load when you boot (again in the terminal):

gksu gedit /etc/modules

And in the section:
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

add 'floppy'. Example:
====
# This file contains the names of kernel modules that should be loaded
# at boot time, one per line. Lines beginning with "#" are ignored.

lp
fuse
floppy
====

and save the file & exit gedit.

In the future you can then do the <Alt><F2> gfloppy

However, if you'd like to put a link/menu item in the Applications menu,
let me know and I'll walk you as well.

I'll leave it to the 'others' to guide you through the music CD bits.
