 From the data at the above URL, you should ensure that, upon booting 
into your installed Ubuntu configuration, the following mixer controls 
are set:

'Master', 'PCM', 'Master Surround', 'Surround', 'Center', 'LFE' should 
all be unmuted and set to ~80%;

and the two problematic mixer controls for your codec model should be set:

'IEC958 Playback AC97-SPSA' to 0, and 'External Amplifier' to unmuted.
