Thanks for this advice. Unfortunately, I can't change the volume
controls: the volume control on the GNOME menubar has a mute symbol on
it, and if I click on it, it does not pop-up. If I double-click on it
(or choose "Open Volume Control" from its context-menu), I get an error
requester saying "No volume control GStreamer plugins and/or devices
found". If I choose "Preferences" from its context-menu, nothing seems
to happen.
If I run System > Preferences > Sound, I do get a preferences window.
The first three settings are set to 'Autodetect', and the 4th ('Sound
capture') to 'ALSA'. Under 'Default Mixer Tracks', the 'Device' list is
ghosted out with no value shown.
If I press Sound Events -> Test, I get an error requester saying:
audiotestsrc wave=sine freq=512 ! audioconvert ! audioresample !
gconfaudiosink: Failed to connect stream: Invalid argument
If I then attempt to close that requester, the sound preferences window
locks up.
Would it help to re-run the alsa-info script from my actual Ubuntu
environment, to see if this gives different results to running it from
the live CD (where the soundcard is detected and does work)?
Thanks,
David.
