Could be a problem with the X server
First run the option in the boot menu that lets you check the CD on
_your_ computer.

Then make sure you don't have 2 graphic cards (sometimes people have an
integrated graphic chipset and a graphic card, and you might then need
to configure the bios), 2 monitors or any unusual setup. One graphic
card, one monitor, one mouse, one keyboard. Make sure you have enough
RAM (512Mo to be safe, 256Mo might work if you don't have an integrated
graphic chip).
Try that first.

If it doesn't work, try booting in safe graphic mode.

Then there's the alternate CD install, of course.

You can also check your RAM by running memtest overnight (or more than
one hour).$

If the above doesn't work, we'll need to know the model and brand of
your graphic card.
