I don't see how that would give you any problems. Try doing what I told
you when you have the time, then please report to the list so people who
now more about your hardware can tell you.

Trying an Ubuntu 8.10 LiveCD (if you can) might help if there's been
some improvement in that newer release (and with 8.10 you get more
options to troubleshoot the problem, even though they weren't enough
when I had these kind of problems).
