Kernel panics happen when the loaded kernel fails and has no idea what
to do next. One reason for this is, for example, if it tries to access
the hard disk and finds none.

It is easy to roll back: you can choose between different kernels at the
boot prompt, the same where you choose the newly installed kernel to
boot. You can simply reboot and choose another one (the one from which
you booted the last time it worked).
