OK - so to recap you have no text ttys at Control-Alt-F1 thru 6, just
black screens.
Further, IIRC you are using gutsy.
Do you have an intel video card (part of motherboard or separate ?)
There was a bug in gutsy I ran into personally.

The solution is to downgrade xserver-xorg-intel to
2.2.1.1-somthingorother and 'pin' it there instead of the 2.2.2.0
The problem is fixed in hardy.
