best graphical mode on ubuntu 8.04 server

hello all

now i seem to get error wen i put in apt-get install ubuntu-desktop it says
package  not found

and even the apt-get update doesnt happen it says cudnt resolve
security.ubuntu.com

how can get gnome running on my ubuntu  8.04 server
