best graphical mode on ubuntu 8.04 server

This isn't unusual the server is probably being updated or something. 
Just try later or use a different mirror.

My original suggestion was to install ubuntu-desktop, but gnome-core is 
more appropriate for a server, this is what I use.  It doesn't load a 
load of extra apps like open office etc..
