Kernel updates and the restricted modules....

Do you have linux-restricted-modules-generic  installed? (Or the
linux-restricted-modules-* for the type of kernel you happen to have
installed)

Note the description: this is a meta-package whose whole purpose is to
depend on the latest restricted modules to make sure they get installed.
This has always worked for me since Ubuntu 4.10
