I did nothing else to get it run. You have to log in kde or gnome, 
whatever you use, first.

In KDE you can run displayconfig also if you open: "systemconfiguration 
-> Monitor&Display" (I don't know the exact names, because I have a 
german version...) It doesn't show the name "displayconfig" in the 
window bar, but nevertheless it is the same program.

If you use gnome, there should also be such a configuration utility 
somewhere, but I don't know where.
