I take it you tried 7.10 (Gutsy), 7.04 (Feisty) and 6.06 (Dapper).
Alright, so from what I understand, from this page
http://www.ubuntu.com/getubuntu/download
- in the section "Which release do you want?"
you checked the radio button for "Ubuntu 7.10 - Supported to 2009" under
"Desktop edition";
- under "What kind of computer do you have?" you checked the "64bit AMD and
Intel computers" radio button;
- you chose a mirror near you from the drop-down list;
- you checked the checkbox labelled "Check here if you need the alternate
desktop CD. This CD does not include the Live CD, instead it uses a
text-based installer." in order to get the alternate desktop install CD.

...and also checked the md5sum. And still got the blank screen at some point
after selecting an install method from the menu.

I understand. The reason I was asking whether you tried the alternate
install version is that a while ago I had at work a bunch of Fujitsu-Siemens
desktops that I wanted to install Edgy (Ubuntu 6.10) on and the CD simply
wouldn't boot. (Then after Feisty - 7.04 - was released it was all OK.)
Alright, here's what I've been thinking of. Get the alternate x64 desktop
install CD, boot from it and when you get to the menu with "Install in text
mode", "Memory test" etc don't do anything, but instead press <esc>. You'll
get a window saying "You are leaving the graphical boot menu and starting
the text mode interface. <OK> <Cancel>" Select <OK>
Next you'll get a black screen with a "boot: " prompt on top. Right there,
enter
install acpi=off
and hit enter and see if it boots this way.
Apart from this I can't think of anything else but maybe this solves your
problem.
HTH.
