Model?

Another question? Are you seeing disk activity (disk light) when it does
this?

Reason for asking is that I have another system (desktop) that exhibits
almost exactly what you are seeing on your laptop if it sits idle for
some time. In fact it just did it this morning. I can see the disk light
thrashing about, however if I Ctl-Alt+F1, the tty1 login eventually
comes up (takes about 2 min as I think the disk activity is taking up
all of the cpu), but it takes another 2 minutes between the username and
password prompt. Once I get in, the tty is pretty much unusable as it
takes 2 minutes between each command.
The one other time that this happened I was able to Ctl-Alt-Del and
eventually used the power button to power down. This time I've just
disconnected the network link and I'm going to let it go for a few hours
to see if the disk activity eventually stops. If I recall, I reinstalled
Tracker on this machine (have purged tracker from all of my otheres), so
it could be tracker doing it's index:

https://bugs.launchpad.net/ubuntu/+source/tracker/+bug/130935

I'll let you know if that's the case on my system.
