I may end up using ndiswrapper in the end but have
made significant progress with the rt61pci mod(not
receiving signal yet but searching for one) and would
like to continue if the list will keep replying. I
will report on progress and what I've done as soon as
I answer my list mail.

You need to show me what uname -a puts out as I see
several generic mernels with i386 and i686 tags on
them.
