Wireless issues, but oddly the opposite of what you normally hear....

If it's a "bad router" how can I see it under linux but not under Vista?
Ignoring the fact that I cannot authenticate to it under linux,
presumably because the landlady has given me an incorrect password,
why it it showing up like the beacon it is under one operating system
and being completely masked under a fresh, clean install of Vista.
I should point out that it's working perfectly well for the PC plugged
into it via an Ethernet cable, so I don't have any reason to believe
the router part of the hardware is fubar, and I can see it
broadcasting packets wirelessly under linux so I don't see anything
wrong with it wirelessly either.
