We're only complicating things *a lot* by trying to get DVD movies
mounted before we even figure out why your regular data dvd is acting
wonky. However, if you want to try to narrow that down, try mount a dvd
 with udf.

mount -t udf /dev/cdrom /media/cdrom

There should be no ISO9660 messages in the log then, just something that
looks like this:

[84669.499007] UDF-fs: Partition marked readonly; forcing readonly mount
[84669.534982] UDF-fs INFO UDF 0.9.8.1 (2004/29/09) Mounting volume
'SUPERMAN_II_RICHARD_DONNER_CUT', timestamp 2006/09/18 15:29 (1f10

However, dealing with DVD movies adds the possibility that your DVD
drive has a region code set and you're trying to mount a dvd from a
different region, which I believe will not work.
