reinstalling ubuntu-desktop might be the solution.
Have you reeinstalled ubuntu-desktop yet? Purging
before installing might take out some things the
installing wont automatically put back so keep you
konsole window open so that you have a list of all the
things removed and have something to go by to
reinstall.
