I risk being accused of self-promotion here, but my signature contains
a couple of URLs that you might find of interest :)
"INX is Not X" has been a project of mine, with help from the INX team
on Launchpad. It is a live CD built on "ubuntu standard" and
"ubuntu minimal" which is designed to be a fun way to learn about using
the command line on Ubuntu (or a Debian-based distro).

You might enjoy exploring the INX live CD. I wrote the code in bash,
and it gives you a series of choices from menus. I am self-taught, so
the scripts are mostly pretty simple and probably not very elegant, but
the CD works and it has nine tutorials, plus some explanations of
various applications.
It comes in colours as well ;-)
Have a look at the screen shots - it isn't intimidating, and my goal was
exactly to make the command line more easily learnt. You can download it
