Thanks for that added info!

And for Paolo; until you get this sorted out you can set your default
session to failsafe by doing the following:

System|Administration|Login Window|Default sesson|Failsafe GNOME

Hopefully that will keep you out of the slow mode until you/we/they
figure out the problem. I'd forgotten that I actually have this set for
my old 800Mhz/128MB Ram IBM A21M Thinkpad in Hardy in order to have a
viable mouse movement, respectible glxgears etc., and where I use no
compiz or any other fancy screens.
