Video driver problem on upgrade to Hardy

Hi to all.

I upgraded my system from version 7.10 to 8.04 in my Toshiba Tecra A7 with
an ATI X1400 card.
My first problem was that the system couldn't find information about my
display devices (graphics card and monitor).
The only way to get around this was to install the fglrx driver.
After installing the driver the resolution was correct but the interface was
too slow.
I've uninstalled the fglrx driver and booted in recovery mode and runned the
"xfix" to clean my xorg.conf file.
After that I could use the system with the correct resolution without the
fglrx driver but interface was still slow.
I've tried the failsafe gnome and system worked like a charm, like described
here.
Following the advice that another user posted here, I created a new user to
see how the interface responded. The interface was slow like it was witg the
normal user, but i found out that the system was enabling the xserver-xgl
through a pop-up when starting with the new user. I followed the
instructions to disable the xserver-xgl described there and voilá...
everything works like a charm with no more slow interface.

So, to disable the xserver-xgl you need to create a file named disable in
~/.config/xserver-xgl/
But the better solution is to remove the xserver-xgl package from your
system, since its no longer need to display the fancy compiz effects using
the fglrx drivers.
To remove the xserver-xgl driver run this command:
sudo apt-get remove --purge xserver-xgl

Hope that works for you.
