If it's a Pentium 'Classic' you're likely to have a buggy usb 1.0
controller.  USB didn't work very well until 1.1.  

But I'm sure there's other USB bugs out there too.

I concur.  I don't know of any USB host controllers that aren't fully
supported in linux.
