(Network) Can not connect to internet after install of Ubuntu

This is not a matter of style, but a matter of logic. How shall we guess
your network topology at your home?

Is this really a modem, or a router? Maybe you have a more exact description
of the device? For a modem you have to setup pppoe on the ubuntu machine.
A router should work out of the box.

Is the gateway a separate entity from the modem?

Then it should be a router not a modem, this is confusing.

If it is a router, then Ubuntu should get all informations from it
the same way the Windows machines get it. No need to configure anything
in Ubuntu. Only be sure that you didn't switched of DHCP in the router
recently.
