No... beta is beta. But with regards to your problem; there may be two
possible problems (or a combination of the two).

1. I found that 8.04 changed my hosts file so that the local host wasn't
being resolved. This affects sudo in this version for some reason. In my
host file:

$ cat /etc/hosts
127.0.0.1 localhost ubuntu.mshome
127.0.1.1 ubuntu

.mshome was being added to 127.0.1.1 ubuntu (127.0.1.1 ubuntu.mshome).
After I modified sudo worked again. Also check your /etc/hostname to
make sure that it has the hostname (in the sample above: ubuntu).

2. The home directory for root was /home/root when it should have been
/root.

There are bugs filed for the above, but I don't have them handy just now.
