But you do have that in your /etc/network/interfaces file:
auto eth1
iface wlan0 inet static
address 192.168.144.222
netmask 255.255.255.0
gateway 192.168.144.120
wireless-essid [my essid]
auto wlan0
I would just take that out ("sudoedit /etc/network/interfaces" and
clearing out everything but loopback is how I'd do it, but using
System/Administration/Network and putting all devices in "roaming mode"
will do it, too).

This must be due to the fact that your network cards are configured
rather than in roaming mode.

Well, either you or some tool (or the installer). From the point of view
of network-manager, it doesn't matter ;-)

Once you've got network manager controlling your devices, everything
should be good to go.
