Really dumb complaint - we hate the light- brown desktop at the start!

If I understand what you mean, this is the desktop background.
Rightclick the Desktop -> Change Desktop Background. There you can pick
a background image, but also a color (bottom of window). On my PC, this
is what I see after logging in until the background image comes up.
