Me neither :-)  But that sounds exactly right.  sg is the scsi-generic
driver, and sd_mod is the disc driver, and SATA drives certainly require
them.

initramfs ...  I'm not an expert there, either :-(

I'd google for PATA and initrd or initramfs.
