Cant play any video/dvd since upgrade to gutsy

Did an upgrade from Fiesty to Gutsy a couple of days ago.   i now cant
play any video or DVD files;).

.avi files just show up a static (horozontal) mainly green mess.  DVD
does same and says audio device is bust.  I have tried xine and
mplayer as well as totum movie player.

I have tried adding the from restricted formats and also added
mediubuntu packages.

Any ideas?
