Did you do "dpkg-reconfigure usplash" after editing /etc/usplash.conf?
This will update your initrd. It is my understanding that Usplash is  
loaded from
the initrd and has no access to /etc/usplash.conf at boot time.
I had black screens directly after the login screen, now everything works
just fine.
