strange behaviour

James, let me tell you, its not your cats fault, so please dont feed 
him/her to the dog (no pun intended :) )

ive noticed the same thing happen with Kubuntu, but most it only occured 
after i first booted the computer. if i were to restart the X server, i 
didnt have to "login" twice.

IMHO its probably just a bug with ubuntu
