I have recently downloaded xubuntu alternate, the md5 checked ok, and
the burned image CD was used to install an old toshiba tecra laptop OK
at a club meeting in uk recently.
The md5 sum I used then was
d38e78d8a8b6e8e43ded19cdaa2d0361 *xubuntu-7.04-alternate-i386.iso
This checked out ok.

I have almost never had md5 download problems. I have only
occasionally had md5 CD burned problems, mostly I think from burning
at the (top) rated speed of my system and media (52x) and I only get
guaranteed error free burns if I slow this down to 24x.

I believe that ratings are ok for commercial products which will
mostly burn music, but with CD images, it may need to be a higher
quality burn.

Good luck.
